3rd Annual Hot Times Kate Schulte Tribute
2014’s tribute featured artist-in-residence emeritus Kidd Jordan in three performances with The Jazz Poetry Ensemble and in a workshop at Capital University.
The first performance was on September 3 at Natalie’s Coal-Fired Pizza. This program was spontaneously performed in classic Kidd Jordan style. The first set featured a rare reading of Michael Vander Does’s Pushcart Prize nominated poem, Thanamattapoeia. The second set featured sections of his poem A. Curassavica. It was an incredible evening and can be listened to on CDBaby. Kidd’s comment on hearing the CD was that we had “captured fire”.
The following evening Kidd and the Jazz Poetry Ensemble (Roger Hines, Roger Myers, Brett Burleson, and Michael Vander Does) performed at Dick’s Den. Towards the end of the evening they were joined by various local musicians. It was an amazing evening.
The crown jewel of the weekend was the free public performance at the Hot Times Festival. Kidd and The Jazz Poetry Ensemble was joined by Kris Keith and Eddie Bayard for The Flytown Blues Project, honoring Columbus native and jazz legend Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
